In the last two decade, the UK government has opened the job market to citizens of other countries to reduce the acute shortage of suitably qualified skilled workers. In early 2000 a significant Indian professional migrated to UK to fill the skilled vacuum in the job market.

There is a good number of Malankara faithful among the migrants who settled in UK and work in all sectors. The eagerness of these people to practise the liturgy in which they are born and brought up ie; Malankara Catholic Church, gave rise the need for starting Malankara Catholic Church Missions in UK.

His Holiness John Paul II appointed His Excellency Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas, as the new Apostolic Visitator to North America, Canada and Europe in the year 2005. Taking into consider the need of co-ordinating the Malankara faithful in UK His Excellency visited London on July 2005 and Celebrated the Holy Mass at St Michales Church, East Ham before the malayalee community on 17th Jul 2005. During his visit he made initial enquiry regarding starting the mission. This would be the right occasion to thank Mr Bernad Kilroy a close friend of His Excellency and well wisher of the Malankara Catholic Church who facilitated a number of appointments with Bishops and other eminent personalities.

To strengthen the development of the UK Mission, Cor-Episcopo Geevarghese Mannikkarott, Assistant Administrator for Europe and North America visited twice in the years 2005 and 2006 at the request of His Excellency. The visit was fruitful in grouping the Malankara faithful in London and Bristol.

To foster the spiritual activities of the Malankara community in Europe and make proposals for new missions and related pastoral activities Our Bishop Joseph Mar Thomas appointed Fr Louis Charuvila as the coordinator for Malankara Catholic Church UK in consultation with Catholicos as per the statutes published for the European Missions. This appointment was effected from 1st December 2007.

The first Pastoral Council was formed on 22nd March 2008, in the presence of Fr Gigi Philip Charivyupurayidom, a special delegate appointed by His Excellency for the Holy week celebrations 2008.

The elected pastoral council members are President: Mr. P A Kuruvila, Vice President: Mr. Joy Plavila, General Secretary: Mr. Rony Jacob, Jt. Secretary: Mr. Joseph Puthenparampil, Treasurer: Mr. Tony Kuruvila. The election was validated by His Excellency Joseph Mar Thomas in a circular published from Mar Ivanios Malankara Centre, Bishops House, New York dated 21st April 2008 with the blessings of His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos. Appointment letters from His Excellency Joseph Mar Thomas was issued to all the office bearers.

Rev Fr Louis Charuvilla takes the lead in starting a new Mission in Bristol comprising our faithfull residing Bristol, Gloucester and Cardiff (Wales). During his tenure the faithful were lucky to have various liturgical celebrations pertaining to each liturgical season.

Taking into consider the Pastoral needs of the region His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis the Major Archbishop and Catholicos of the Malankara Catholic Church appointed Rev Fr Daniel Kulangara as the special pastor and co-ordinator for UK region in consultation with Bishops Council of England & Wales. The appointment was effected from 1st August 2009. We are deeply indebted to the Catholic Diocese of Brentwood and the Bishop Rt. Rev Thomas McMahon for the present status.

On July 14, 2010 The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI erected a new Exarchate for the Malankara Catholics in North America. Rev. Fr. Thomas Naickamparambil of the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum is appointed the first Bishop of the new Exarchate. The Bishop-elect is also appointed Apostolic Visitator of the Malankara Catholics in Canada and Europe by the Holy Father.
